I have had this device for 8 years, use it daily and even upgraded it from 1TB to a 2TB internal drive. The HAP is connected to a Dolby Atmos Denon amplifier and produces the most beautiful sound I have ever heard. Bass is punchy when needed but also mellow when listening to lower tempo tracks. The build quality is solid and impressive, a heavy beast which sites nicely with the rest of by components. While the app can at times be a little testing, not appearing on iPhone I always believe this is a Wi-Fi related network issue rather than the app itself. I just love this device and wish it had been developed more by Sony.

I can happily say that I am a proud owner of the Sony HAP-ZIES. First impressions when bought was that it was a well and solidly built hifi piece. I was particularly impressed with the fact that I was able to do a one-off transfer of all my 850 cd albums which occupied only small portion of the 1TB internal hard drive. Transfer took a while given the size of my cd collection but was seamless. I would strongly advise on using an ethenet connection when transferring large volume of cds as it is exceptionally quicker. The internal Gracenote app even provided information about some of my old tracks which I was unaware of. What impressed me most about the HAP-Z1ES was the quality of the sound production......it's just phenomenal and its hard to beat. The remote that came with it was quite redundant. I think Sony might have done this on purpose to encourage people to instead use the HDD Remote app instead....and they were surely right as the remote app has loads of functionalities including a search function which comes handy for me when I want to select tracks out of thousands. Its yet early to give a full review as I have only owned it for about a month but so far I couldnt find any faults as yet. I can see myself hanging on to it for years to come as long as Sony keeps updating the firmware, apps etc

Genau das was ich gesucht habe... Ersetzt meinen High End CD Player, und klingt genauso gut. DSEE "poliert" MP3 und normale CD 16 Bit Aufnahmen auf,...klingt danach detaillierter.

Prachtige oplossing om eindelijk je CD-verzameling weg te doen, een echte en goed te bedienen HDD-recorder. Werking is subliem, eenvoud, mooie App, geluid is top. Een echter aanrader. Kost wel wat, maar dan heb je ook wat.

Ich habe das Gerät nun einige Wochen in Gebrauch. Die Verarbeitung ist sehr gut; lediglich die beigefügte FB ist billig (Plastik). Die eingebaute Festplatte ist sehr leise. Die Bedienung ist einfach und die Anzeige reicht aus. Das Gerät hat einen eingebauten DAC-Verstärker, so dass es direkt an einen Verstärker angeschlossen werden kann. Nun zum Grund des Kaufes: alle meine CDs passen - im FLAC-Format - auf die Festplatte (>800). Der Klang ist überragend. Es gibt einen Stern Abzug für die FB und dass es keine direkte Überspiel- Möglichkeit vom/zum PC gibt.

Llevo un año con este servidor musical y por su fantástico sonido y su facilidad de uso me parece que es un producto que aventaja por mucho a su competencia en este nivel de precio. Un high-end killer.

Sony est de nouveau exemplaire pour sa qualité et solidité de ces produits. Le HAP-Z1ES ne fait pas exception. Il se marie parfaitement avec ma chaine High-End analogique et numérique et livre un son exceptionnel. Son design est cool et simple avec une fonctionnalité de base sans être gadgétisé. Un vrais plaisir pour l'oeil et oreille.

Beautifully built, like a rock and very heavy this is a serious music player for uber serious audiophiles. All my music is now automatically upscaled to double DSD, you can of course change this to your original native music res if required. Well designed software for iPads or Tabs and your smart phone for remote. Downloading music to the hard drive can be a slow process, but once its done there are no streaming issues to ever worry about. Value for money for this type of player is excellent. Recommended.

Ik had eerst een netwerk speler met een NAS en was erg ontevreden over de bediening. Na diverse positieve recensies gelezen te hebben over de HAP-Z1 ES uiteindelijk er een aangeschaft. Wat ik niet had verwacht: het spelen van muziek is weer echt leuk geworden! De app op IOS is razendsnel, de kleuren van het display die meegaan met de hoeskleur maken het ook leuk (dynamischer) en het zijn vooral de kleine dingetjes die dit apparaat een wondermachine maken. Zo kun je de speler tijdens het afspelen gewoon uitzetten. Later weer aanzetten: staat hij in de pauzestand bij de laatste nummer! Dus kun je gewoon verder met de CD 'van gisteren'. Muziek starten via de app maar de bediening later overnemen op het apparaat is geen probleem. Kies je op het apparaat een andere CD dan zie je dat binnen de app ook weer terug. Geweldig! En de speler speelt gewoon lekker door als ik een netwerkstoring heb. Zo hoort dat ook. Wel heb ik 1 ding moeten doen om gemakkelijk door mijn muziek collectie te kunnen bladeren: ik heb al mijn muziek in diverse mapjes onderverdeeld (piano, klassiek, nederlands, audiophile, etc) en vervolgens mbv mp3tag alle CD's dezelfde genre toegewezen als de mapnaam. Hierdoor kan ik via 'genre' als het ware door al mijn muziek bladeren. Geweldig! Het gebeurt niet vaak dat ik echt heeeeeeel enthousiast ben over een apparaat, maar dit is er dus een van!

Das Konzept ist für mich stimmig und besser als die reinen Streamer (für hochauflösende Dateien will man keinen Flaschenhals WLAN). Wertigkeit des Gerätes ist absolut in Ordnung, obwohl man da auch etwas mehr Feinschliff erwarten könnte. Z.B. Seitenteile wie bei meinen alten ES-Geräten und teilweise bei der Konkurrenz oder eine Fernbedienung die der Wertigkeit des Gerätes entspricht. Ja, man nutzt meist die App, aber wenn man die Fernbedienung mal in die Hand nimmt, glaubt man nicht, dass das billige Plastikding zu dem Gerät gehört. Aber in Summe optisch ansprechend. Musikalisch gibt es für mich überhaupt nichts zu meckern - spielt sehr ordentlich und hört sich toll an. Die Bedienung ist bei dem Gerät echt das größte Ärgernis. Es ist die Summe an Kleinigkeiten, die es letztendlich schwierig macht. Synchronisation ist ja etwas, das bei einem lokalen Konzept klappen sollte. Warum eine mp3-Datei, die auf dem Rechner durch eine flac-Datei ersetzt wurde auf dem Gerät weiterhin in beiden Versionen zu finden ist, verstehe ich nicht. Radio-Favoriten auf der fünften Menüebene, tagelanges synchronisieren ohne irgendwelche spürbare Auswirkungen, ein eigener SenseMe Menüpunkt, der keinerlei Funktionen hat (alle Dateien ohne Zuordnung, usw., usw. Ich hoffe immer noch, dass die Softwareentwickler weiter an der App und Firmware arbeiten, denn eigentlich hat das Gerät und das Konzept großes Potential. Also für die Technik eine 1, für das Design/die Ausführung eine 2 und für die Bedienung eine 3. In Summe also ein gutes Gerät, aber im Moment muss man noch mit Einschränkungen in Kauf nehmen... Wenn man es schafft die Software sehr gut zu machen, ist die Gesamtbewertung auch eine 1.

De Sony HAP Z1 is echt een super audio speler. De bediening via de app werkt perfect. Er is echter 1 groot gemis: Geen DLNA. Ik hoop dat deze toch nog word toegevoegd in de toekomst. Verder ben ik SUPER tevreden over de HAP Z1

Acostumbrado a la reproducción clásica de Vinilos y CD con marcas de alta gama, decidi probar con este componente, no sin cierto excepticismo. Tengo que decir que mis dudas se han disipado, y cuanto mas uso hago de este componente mas me agrada su sonido. Es excepcional la calidad de su reproducion y no tiene nada que envidiar a los componentes tradicionales, Se lo recomiendo a los audiofilos con dudas como estaba yo, no se arrepentirán. El software de manejo justito, pero se puede utilizar el explotador clásico

Die Kombination von Internet-Radio und rechnerunabhängigem Festplattenrecorder fügt sich ideal in vorhandene HiFi-Anlagen ein. Die Bedienung sowohl über das eingebaute Farbdisplay als auch über IPad und Smartphone Apps ist sehr einfach und selbsterklärend, die Wiedergabequalität hervorragend. Die Übertragungsgeschwindigkeit für Musikdateien ist gut. Hilfreich ist auch die Vielzahl von kompatiblen Dateiformaten. Insgesamt ein stimmiges Konzept mit einem für Qualität und Funktion akzeptablen Preis-Leistungsverhältnis, auch weil es die Anschaffung von Radioempfänger und CD-Spieler ersetzen kann.

Im Januar 2015 habe ich dieses Gerät - mit hohen Erwartungen - als Ablösung einer "NAS - Streamer - DAC" - Kette gekauft. Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht bzw. meine Erwartungen in klanglicher Hinsicht sogar bei Weitem übertroffen - was an Musik (insb. bei DSD/HiRes-Material) aus diesem Gerät heraus kommt ist einfach nur... WOW! - Musik neu erlebt. Viele bemängeln am HAP-Z1ES die fehlenden Digital Ein-/Ausgänge. Das kann man - völlig zurecht - so sehen, aber es widerspricht dem Ansatz von Sony - ein komplett integriertes Gerät, welches einfach und intuitiv von JederFrau bedient werden kann ohne IT-Diplom - und das funktioniert (habe es ausprobiert...) Warum keine 5 Sterne? - Wermutstropfen ist leider (noch) ein bisschen die im Player eingesetzte Firmware. Die tolle iOS/Android findet (zumindest bei meinem Setup hier) regelmäßig das Gerät nicht mehr - was nur durch aus-/einschalten des Players behoben werden kann ... was wirklich ärgerlich ist, wenn das Gerät auf einer Galerie betrieben wird, man selbst aber auf dem Sofa "unten" Musik genießt. Dazu kommt noch das - mittlerweile hinlänglich bekannte - vTuner-Problem, über dass "alle Welt" schon berichtet hat (um ehrlich zu sein: außer gelegentlichen Aussetzern/Umschaltverzögerungen habe ich von diesem Problem noch nichts gehört - nutze das Internet Radio aber auch kaum, da ich einen hervorragenden Creek-Tuner besitze... und UKW ist in punkto Radio-Qualität jedem Internet-Stream einfach meilenweit überlegen - aber der Sony liefert auch hier das best mögliche Ergebnis (DSEE anmachen..), für die Qualität des Zulieferers kann er ja nichts). Fazit: Alles in Allem ein tolles Gerät, welches mir jeden Tag viel Freude bereitet, wer das ultimative Klangerlebnis sucht, liegt hier genau richtig. Für Freunde des "NAS-streamings" ist das Gerät hingegen nicht geeignet.

J'ai branché le Z1ES via ses sorties XLR. La première chose qui mm'a bluffé est la qualité du son : vraiment bonne tant en studio master qu'en mp3 (chacun à son niveau bien sur). Il est très facile d'usage et on peut charger la musique rapidement via l'explorateur windows. Un petit reproche : il manque à l'interface sur ipad une vue générale est pochettes d'album un peu comme sur itunes.

De grote harde schijf is ideaal om je hele collectie erop te zetten. In FLAC formaat kun je er ruim 3000 cd's op kwijt. De geluidskwaliteit is prima, het klinkt vaak beter dan op mijn cd-speler. De bediening is verrassend eenvoudig, de installatie is zo gebeurd.

De las mejores compras que he realizado. La definición, escenario y tridimensionalidad de la música que logra hacer este aparato hace que puedas estar escuchándolo horas y horas. Lo reproduce todo ALAC, FLAC, DSD, etc. La transferencia de archivos al disco vía router es bastante lenta, pero una vez están todos los archivos en el disco, funciona muy bien. La reproducción de radio por Vtuner es muy decente, a pesar de la excesiva compresión de algunas cadenas la función DSEE hace su trabajo y se oye muy bien. Una lástima que no pueda reproducir música vía Spotify, es lo que le falta al producto para tener un diez. Por lo demás, un equipo redondo: construcción excepcional, robusto y pesado, precioso en su diseño con lineas retro y de vanguardia. La aplicación para manejar el Z1 desde la tableta (HDD Audio Remote) es excepcional , yo la tengo en el iPad y va fina, fina. Al principio se me colgaba un poco pero ahora va muy bien. Un equipo fantástico

you can tell there's but coming......stuff that could be done better ..music transfere software kept falling over until I feed it my music collection in bite [pun] sized pieces....of about 50 albums at a time this then was totally seamless... instruction manual is almost useless......if its to get you to experiment and fiddle then it worked ..if not don't waste the paper. omissions ..no digital out ..... whats with the nasty cheap plastic remote ...that seems to have only about 10% of the needed features ?[maybe it has more but there was no obvious instructions other than how to fit batterys ].......again don't put it in the box if it reduces the perceptions of a good bit of kit if you have a smart phone or iphone then ....its junk you need to make an app for the kindle fire ........ and now for the upside .....the sound of my ripped [ to flac] cd collection effectively up-sampled to sacd is just stunning. Easily outperforming a similar quality boutique cdplayer. once you've worked out how to use the various buttons and knobs ...its relatively simple [but still finding options mostly by accident ]

Ich bin schlichtweg begeistert. Der Sony HAP-Z1 ES bietet mir einen sehr hohen Komfort in der Bedienung und dem Zugriff auf meine Musiksammlung. Da ich ausdrücklich eine stand-alone-Lösung (keinen Streamer, bei dem ein Computer permanent mitlaufen muss) haben wollte, vermisse ich diese Funktionalität auch nicht. Der Klang fasziniert mich besonders. Eine sehr hohe Detailauflösung geht hier einher mit einer Musikalität, die ich so nicht erwartet hätte.

Having been a user of ES products in the past I am pleased to say that Sony have produced another quality product which continues that heritage. The build quality is second to non and sonically the unit borders on breathtaking - it really is that good. The positioning of instruments, the clarity and presence of vocals, the depth of bass and drums are all as the recording engineer and artist must have envisaged. The remote app makes song selection an easy task. If ever a piece of hifi equipment deserves to be auditioned, then this is it - you will not be disappointed.

Subliem geluid! Gebruik de Sony HAP niet allen voor High Ress downloads maar ook voor het afspelen van al mijn ingelezen CD's. De weergave is beter dan met mijn CD speler die meer kost dan het Sony toestel. De weergave wordt verzorgd door 'Audio Research' versterkers die elk detail hoorbaar maken.

Last 50 years I have been diligently testing high-end stereo equippments. I listen mostly to classical music. HAP-Z1ES is deep-laid tool for music lover that wants a good sound quality. It is convenient to keep the music files in the equippment and manage it with smartphone. There are four family members in my home and thereof three students. Therefor I´m not always able to have a computer for myself even if there are three of them in the house. Therefor it is convenient that the player is standalone unit. HAP-Z1ES is built as high end tool, the resonance from racks do not affect the sound much and I can use high-quality balanced interlinks and power cables. No mismatching from file to DAC. I bought HAP-Z1ES to play high-res files, which I do with great pleasure, but its sound quality from files 44,1- 16 bit are so good that I have ripped CD- disks (lossless uncompressed) much more than I expected that I would, and listen to them in HAP- Z1ES even though I have an excellent CD- player. (First I ballance the CD-disks., clean them and degauss.) HAP-Z1ES does not sound digital, rather very natural and comfortable. It is also user friendly. Anybody can choose wether he uses the DSD Remastering engine or not. I have it nearly always on. I have never been in trouble with the technique. First I used WIFI and now I have it wired to router connected to desktop computer so now the files transfer faster and I also have access point in my listening room. The upgrades come whithout trouble. I recommend this player.

I bought this player 3 months ago and ever since this player never stopped to give me musical joy. Great sound and great build quality. I recommend the people to buy this product with eyes closed. Every product from this brand works perfectly even after 15 years. I like Sony and everything she does makes me happy.

This is an brilliant music player, with very good build quality and finish. Once you've got your music on there, it's very simple to use. The tablet-based control program is good, although I find the Android version a bit slower and clunkier than the iPad one! My only real criticism is that the full manual should be available as a pdf file not just as an HTML resource. Highly recommended.
